WASHINGTON, DC (7/11/18) — Veteran technology leader Martin Riegel has been named Chief Executive Officer of STRmix™ Ltd., the newly formed subsidiary of the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR).
STRmix™ Ltd. was founded to better serve international customers of STRmix™, the sophisticated forensic software used to resolve mixed DNA profiles previously thought to be too complex to interpret.
Riegel comes to STRmix™ Ltd. after serving as a Principal at Broadfield Advisory, which he co-founded in 2013 to actively help technology companies globally. To that end, he has served as CEO of UbiquiOS Technology, a provider of low-cost wireless connectivity for IoT, and Biotelliga Holdings, a leader in the development and commercialization of sustainable biocontrols for agriculture.
“Martin has a superior track record of success in the application of technology in companies of all sizes, melding governance, strategy, and operational performance,” says Hamish Findlay, a spokesperson for ESR. “He is the ideal person to further support STRmix™ and its customers.”
“STRmix™ has had great support from the community, and so we are looking to continue to invest in the science to make STRmix™ even more powerful for forensic labs globally,” Riegel explains.
Thirty-two U.S. labs now routinely use STRmix™ in resolving DNA profiles. This includes everything from federal agencies such as the ATF and the FBI to state and local agencies. STRmix™ is also in various stages of installation, validation, and training in 56 other U.S. labs. It has been used to interpret DNA in thousands of cases by laboratories in Australia, England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, and New Zealand.
Riegel began his career as a software developer before moving on to a number of financial and operational roles, including 10 years as Controller at Intel. He served in a range of CFO roles before being named COO and CFO at Healthphone Solutions, a provider of highly connected healthcare software applications.
The graduate of the University of Notre Dame and Indiana University also served as COO and CFO at NextWindow, an international leader of optical multi-touch technology.
STRmix™ was developed by John Buckleton, DSc, FRSNZ, and Jo-Anne Bright of ESR, and Duncan Taylor from Forensic Science South Australia (FSSA).
