Paessler Offers Free Monitoring Solution With Extended Functionality

Paessler, provider of the industry’s most powerful, affordable and easy-to-use network monitoring and testing solutions, today announced the release of a freeware version of Paessler’s PRTG Network Monitor, which can now be used as a free syslog and SNMP trap manager. This enables IT administrators to receive and evaluate all syslogs and SNMP traps in a network. Unlike other free products that are usually restricted to basic functions, PRTG freeware includes professional-grade alert functions, reporting capabilities and data publishing features.

The PRTG freeware offers the entire functionality of Paessler’s premier professional network monitoring solution: PRTG Network Monitor. And now, PRTG’s powerful new syslog and SNMP trap manager can be used in the freeware version. The freeware can alert the IT team in case of emergency, create reports about collected data, manage events via an included ticket system and even monitor multiple company locations. Many server systems send out messages about the system status via syslog. SNMP traps are sent primarily by switches and routers. The PRTG freeware now supports both protocols and thus receives news from the entire network in real time.

The powerful PRTG syslog and SNMP trap manager is able to receive and process more than 10,000 messages per second with information related to failures or other events on the network. The data is stored in a database, which is specially optimized for this purpose and available to the administrator for later research. Extensive filtering options allow the rapid retrieval of desired information. The administrator is notified promptly about critical values by the software – via email, SMS or other designated methods. From the recorded data, reports can be created that are automatically sent to IT managers by the software. The solution includes mobile apps so that the administrator can monitor the network from anywhere, anytime. With all of these capabilities, the freeware offers significantly more functionality than many commercially-available syslog or SNMP trap receivers.

The PRTG freeware includes 10 sensors and allows the use of up to 10 syslog and SNMP trap servers. For example, administrators can use one syslog receiver for the entire network and, in addition, up to nine syslog and / or SNMP trap receivers are available for dedicated monitoring of particularly important devices, such as the firewall or the mail server.
