Actuate Corporation (NASDAQ: BIRT), the people behind BIRT® and the leading open source Business Intelligence vendor, today announced that it has been recognised as the top performing open source Business Intelligence (BI) vendor according to the second annual Wisdom of Crowds Business Intelligence Market Study ™, conducted by independent advisory firm Dresner Advisory Services (DAS), . The results found that Actuate BIRT outperformed other open source BI vendors to secure the leading open source overall ranking by a wide margin.
Using a 32-criteria evaluation model, Business Intelligence vendor market performance was reviewed and ranked on a 5-point scale. Open Source BI vendors are those that have adopted an open source approach offering both “community” (free) and “commercial” editions of their products. Actuate leads in the open source category with an average score of 4.15 out of 5.
With users driving BI purchase and deployment efforts, a demand for better process integration, mobile computing support, in-memory and social capabilities continues to rise. Centered around the open source BIRT design, Actuate’s one design, one server and one user experience approach to improving developer productivity creates an unmatched user experience within a singular environment.
“As a member of the “Open Source” BI market segment, Actuate BIRT is in the top position,” said Howard Dresner, of Dresner Advisory Services. “Actuate BIRT exceeded its peer group and the overall sample average for all Technical Support and Product metrics by a wide margin, and its 2011 performance improved in the areas of Sales, Value, and Recommended over 2010.”

• Open Source and Emerging BI vendors appear to have the youngest customer bases – with the largest percentage of adoption within the past 2+ years.
• A total of 63% of respondents reported budget increases in at least one BI area and 31% of respondents had increases of more than 10% in at least one area.
