CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— Feburary 21, 2012—InterSystems Corporation today announced that Hunterdon Healthcare is rolling out a comprehensive business intelligence application that is setting new standards for real-time decision support. Developed by Cognizant Technology Solutions Corporation, the new Hospital Performance Management (HPM) system at Hunterdon utilizes InterSystems DeepSee™ embedded real-time analytics technology. The implementation was highlighted at the HIMSS12 Annual Conference and Exhibition.
Addressing a Common Healthcare IT Issue
“Like our peers at many integrated delivery networks (IDNs) we have a technology environment that includes a range of applications from multiple vendors, and with hundreds of different interfaces,” said Glenn Mamary, Vice President and CIO at Hunterdon Healthcare. “We’ve been evaluating decision support products for years,” he said. “However, while all of the decision support solutions (DSSs) presented dashboard information clearly, none effectively addressed the need for smooth integration to support connected care. As a result, these solutions were not able to provide information at a systemwide level. In addition,” Mamary continued, “these DSS products, without exception, required storing information on a separate database and running batch jobs each night that copied the data over to the dashboard database for viewing. These approaches wind up delivering information on the dashboards that can be out-of-date, fragmented and incomplete.”
Hunterdon selected Cognizant to develop and deploy a new application that would provide accurate, complete information on key performance indicators (KPIs) in real-time. Cognizant leveraged Hunterdon’s existing investment in the InterSystems CACHÉ® high-performance database system and InterSystems Ensemble® rapid development and integration platform to deliver a new HPM solution that facilitates a seamless flow of information from multiple systems and data repositories. “The new application is CACHÉ-based and uses both Ensemble and DeepSee to provide rapid, efficient access to all of the information we need. As a result, we can use dashboards to monitor real-time data and it’s totally transparent to our users that the information is coming from multiple systems,” said Mamary.

“Our Chief Operating Officer is pleased with this DSS solution,” said Mamary. “We’re currently in discussions with operational and clinical department representatives to get input on which KPIs they want to see. We’re already getting some safety and quality measurements and it’s clear that the closer to real-time that the data is presented on the dashboards, the better.
“On the financial side, we’ll be looking at readmission rates, post-operative issues, and budget variances, as well as adherence to Joint Commission requirements,” Mamary stated. Plans are to complete the HPM application rollout systemwide by the end of 1Q12.
