Securing your website is a serious business. Any leaks of your data or that of your customers can be damaging to relationships and your brand awareness. Website downtime also means a loss in vital sales and leads. But did you know that staying secure does not have to cost the earth? You can do it effectively without spending anything at all.

Importance of Website Security

As online scams and fraud increase, consumers are becoming more attuned to web security. Google and other search engines will now actively block websites from displaying some sites in their browsers if they are a security risk. That means your business could be missing search engine traffic.

In sectors that are normally considered higher-risk, this has become essential. For example, online casino operators have long understood that people want to find trustworthy websites with legit operators. Sites like Bonusfinder can filter them for potential customers, sorting out the best ones based on security and payment gateways. Similar sites are used for everything from insurance to retail goods. If you can reach the level of online trust these have, then you should have no problem getting traffic.

Install a SSL Certificate

SSL stands for secure sockets layer. It is a security protocol that creates a link between a server and a web browser. This enables a secure, encrypted connection and authenticates the identity of the website. It means others can not masquerade as the website to steal information and data.

There are different types of SSL certificates, with the most secure costing quite a bit of money. However, even the free options will ensure you stay safe in the eyes of your customers and crucially, Google. If you have a rudimentary grasp of running a website, you can manage to install them yourself.

Update and Back Up

Updating may seem like a never-ending task. As soon as you do one update, the next one arrives. If you do not time it right, it can result in downtime on the website. Yet all this is necessary and should take place as soon as possible.

Updates are there to secure your site. As hackers become more sophisticated, they find more complex ways to take over content management systems. Updates prevent these, keeping your information safe. Of course, even this cannot keep every hacker at bay, and that is why it is important to back up. However, this is a great preventative step every business should consider. Some plugins can help you back up easily, which you should schedule at least once a month.

Strengthen Passwords

This should apply to you and any employees who use your website. A secure password should be made of letters and numbers, in both cases, with special characters. It should not consist of any personal information that can be easily gleaned from elsewhere, such as names of relatives, or other security question answers. Ideally, it should also be a unique password for the business, which is not used on any other websites or systems.

Staying Safe

These tips will help you stay safe and secure your online presence. However, they are not exhaustive. Make sure you get a professional to check over the systems once a year to ensure you have peace of mind for yourself and your customers.
