Cybersecurity may be a new battle for organizations that have to deal with it. However, in the modern age, you no longer have to just worry about locking the physical doors of your building, but you have to lock the cyber doors as well. 

More robust cybersecurity practices help your business become safer, more trustworthy, and more effective.

What Is Cybersecurity?

According to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, “cybersecurity is a method of protecting network devices and data from unauthorized access or criminal use”. This is basically just a way of making your online portals, websites, and other digital tools safer. 

This ensures that you do not get money stolen, or that your website or other digital tools are not tampered with. It is becoming a necessary component of any modern organization. 

Here are five ways to improve cybersecurity for your business.

1. Protect Your Cloud

If you are storing any information, especially sensitive documents, on a cloud-based platform, it’s important to make sure that your cloud is protected. One way to do this is by implementing Cloud Detection and Response (CDR). 

This can help you identify when or if you are being attacked, and what you can do to respond to them. It provides data and insights so that you don’t end up being blindsided by an attack.

If your cloud is valuable, keep stock of what you are keeping in it and always keep backup records.

2. Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication is another way to ensure the safety of your company. Two-factor authentication is a method of accessing a website or other platform that requires that you provide two forms of identification. This could be a password and phone number, an email and thumbprint, or any other combination of things. 

This helps ensure that if a hacker were to pick up one piece of personal data, they still would not be able to get into valuable information without a second piece of personal data. This makes it much more difficult for hackers. 

This is also very convenient because most forms of two-factor authentication call for things that people will already have on hand, such as their cell phone, email address, or a simple password.

3. Update Your Software Routinely

The older a software is, the weaker it is. Therefore, you want to be sure to update your software regularly to prevent hackers from being able to penetrate your firewall. 

This has other benefits as well, as it ensures that you and your employees are using the latest model of software, which can prevent other issues such as slow loading times, difficulty opening apps, and other technical inconveniences.

4. Strong Passwords

The importance of a strong password cannot be overstated. Passwords with special characters, numbers, and unique words are most effective in preventing hacking. This also means changing passwords regularly. 

Using a password-safe such as LastPass is a great way to ensure that employees are able to remember their passwords when they are complicated and change frequently.

5. Limit Employee Access

Humans are prone to mistakes. They happen all the time! Therefore, it is important to help cut down on human error by limiting what employees are able to access. They should be given just the necessary access to do their job, and no more. 

Not only does it make their lives easier if they do not have to worry about too many things, but it helps the cybersecurity situation immensely, since they are less prone to slip up.

Having regular employee training about cybersecurity and making sure that employees are kept up-to-date in proper cybersecurity practices helps create a work culture that is aware of the risk and can therefore help mitigate it.
